Kalevala Bear – Kaisaleena Mäkelä’s bear returns for the anniversary
Kalevala Bear, originally designed by Kaisaleena Mäkelä in the 1990s, returns for the anniversary year, reinterpreted.
The original Kalevala Bear was part of Mäkelä’s Alkuaika series. Its animal figures were based on archaeological models and drew on the ancient mythical animals of northern peoples. In Finnish mythology, the bear is the strongest of all spirit animals, half of the forest and half kin to humans. Mäkelä designed jewelry for Kalevala Jewelry for 18 years, from 1993 onwards.
The Kalevala Bear collection includes pendants on a chain or leather cord, necklaces, bracelets, charms, earrings and hoop earrings. The pieces come in silver and golden bronze, and some designs also in gold. Kalevala Bear can be worn at any age. A parent and child might choose the same piece, for example.
Kalevala Bear jewelry is handcrafted at our own factory in Helsinki, Finland, and every piece is stamped with the anniversary hallmark. More than 99% of the silver we use is recycled.
